Meet Sam Dorgan: From Engineering to Trainee Financial Planner
From engineering to financial planning
Sam began his career in engineering, a natural path given his strengths in maths and science.
“I was always strong in Maths and Science, so a career in engineering felt like a natural step. I enjoyed the analytical and problem-solving aspects of the role.”
Over time, his interest shifted towards personal finance and investments, leading him to explore financial planning as a career where he could apply similar analytical skills in a more client-focused environment.
Why Britannic Place
Sam was introduced to Britannic Place through strong industry recommendations and was immediately drawn to the firm’s reputation and approach.
“Britannic Place stood out to me because of its strong reputation for professionalism and client-focused advice. I was also encouraged by a mentor within the industry who spoke very highly of the firm.”
He also valued the focus on development and long-term progression.
“The company’s commitment to developing its people and supporting long-term career progression made it feel like the right place to build my career.”
Transition and current role
The move into financial services has been both structured and rewarding for Sam, supported by prior study alongside his previous role.
“The transition was both exciting and challenging. I had already started studying alongside my previous full-time role, which helped build a foundation of knowledge.”
In his current role as a Trainee Financial Planner, Sam supports advisers with client work, financial planning preparation, research, and technical development.
“Day-to-day, I support advisers with client work, preparing financial plans, conducting research, and building my technical knowledge.”
Skills and development
Sam’s engineering background continues to be highly relevant in his day-to-day work.
“My engineering background has given me strong numerical skills and the ability to think logically and analyse problems in a structured way.”
He is currently working towards the Diploma in Regulated Financial Planning, with longerterm ambitions to progress to Chartered status.
“I enjoy continuing to develop my knowledge and skills, and I’m looking forward to the opportunities that come with achieving Chartered status.”
Looking ahead
Sam’s focus is on continued development and building experience with clients as his career progresses.
“My goal is to continue developing my knowledge, start working more directly with clients, and grow into a fully qualified financial planner.”
He also highlights the importance of consistency when changing career direction:
“Stay consistent with your studies, and don’t be afraid to ask questions. The skills you’ve built in your previous role are often more transferable than you expect.”
